If you use your student travel product while you are no longer entitled to it, you will be charged up to € 300.- per month. This is known as an 'oovee fine'.
The longer you keep using your student travel product, the higher the fine. You are charged per half a month.
Did you use your student travel product in the 1st month after you should have cancelled it? Then it costs € 75 per half a month. After that 1st month, the fine is € 150 per half a month. You can check your oovee fine in Mijn DUO. DUO checks regularly if you used your student travel product
Until 1 January 2019 the oovee fine was € 97 per half a month. Whether or not you used the student travel product was not relevant.
As long as you are receiving student finance, we will deduct this fine from your payments. In 2020, the maximum deduction is € 171,16 a month. No longer receiving student finance? You can pay the oovee fine in one instalment, but you can also apply for a repayment plan.

How a payment arrangement works

Not added to student debt
DUO collects the oovee fine on behalf of the public transport companies. Therefore it is not possible to add the oovee fine to your regular student debt. You must start repaying it immediately.
Checks by DUO
