Collecting your student travel product
Part of your student finance is the student travel product. It enables you to travel by Dutch public transport for free or at a reduced rate. You can choose between a weekday product or a weekend product.
Travel product: loan or gift
Your student travel product is a loan (in 2017 € 89.07 per month). Only if you graduate within 10 years, the travel product will be converted into a gift. For this reason, you can also choose not to collect it from a pick-up device.
What do you have to do?
- First apply for student finance.
- Buy a personal OV-chipkaart. If you prefer not to do this online, you can also collect an application form at the service desk of a public transport company. Take a passport photo with you.
- Register your OV-chipkaart number.
- Load the student travel product onto your OV-chipkaart. You can do this at a pick-up device,
2 weeksbefore you are entitled to student finance. If you already receive student finance, we will send you a notice about the pick-up date.
When does it come into effect?
You can start using your travel product from the date you are entitled to student finance. Log in to Mijn DUO to see from which date you qualify for student finance.
Weekday or weekend
You are automatically allocated a weekday product. If you would prefer a weekend product, you can change your product for free. On www.studentenreisproduct.nl you can find the validity of both types.
Cancel when you are no longer entitled
If you are no longer entitled to a student travel product, for example because you stop your studies, you must cancel it yourself at a pick-up device. This will not happen automatically when you cancel your student finance. If you do not cancel in time, it will cost you money.
