Student travel product fine
During an inspection it may turn out that you were not eligible for the student travel product. In that case you will have built up an ‘OV’ fine. As long as you are receiving student finance, we will deduct this fine from your payments. In 2017, the maximum deduction is € 165.46 a month.
How much will you have to pay?
If you cancel your student travel product too late, you will be charged € 97 for each half calendar month. You can pay the OV fine in one instalment, but you can also apply for a payment arrangement.
What do you have to do?
- Log in to Mijn DUO to apply for the repayment arrangement.
- Go to 'Mijn schulden' and choose 'Opbouwen'.
- Go to 'Zelf regelen' and click on 'Aanvragen betalingsgregeling'.
A payment arrangement is only possible if you are no longer receiving student finance and have cancelled your student travel product.
How a payment arrangement works
You may choose between instalments of € 135 or € 45 a month. A lower amount is not possible. Interest will be charged over the OV fine at 2%. The monthly payments will be deducted from your bank account automatically around the 25th of the month.

Not added to student debt
DUO collects the OV fine on behalf of the public transport companies. Therefore it is not possible to add the OV fine to your regular student debt. You must start repaying it immediately.
Checks by DUO
DUO performs checks to ensure that you receive what you are entitled to. You always have to pay back wrongfully received student finance. Therefore immediately submit changes in your situation through Mijn DUO.
