Compensation for students under student loan system (HO)

If you were a student for 1 or more years while the student loan system was in place (2015-2023), you did not receive a basic grant during that period. You will be compensated for this financially.

Conditions

  • You were eligible for a student grant. It doesn’t matter if you applied for a student grant or not.
  • You studied for at least 12 months under the student loan system. Those 12 months fell within the official duration of your programme.
  • You obtained, or will obtain, your degree within the 10 years diploma period.

If you were only entitled to a tuition fees loan or a lifelong learning credit, you are not eligible for this compensation.

How much and when

The amount of the compensation is €29.92 per month. You can only get it for the official duration of your study. For a 4 year study it adds up to a maximum amount of €1,436. For a longer study you may get more compensation. It will be offset against your student debt or paid out to you if you no longer have any outstanding student debt.

That will take place from 2025 or later if you graduate after that date.

Automatic notification

DUO will notify you automatically if you are entitled to compensation. So you don’t have to do anything yourself at this time.

Not yet finalized

The plans are not yet final as they still have to be approved by the Senate. That will probably happen in June.
