Like students in higher education (HBO and university), students in secondary vocational education (MBO) will get 35 years to repay their student debt. As a result, the interest rate will change as well. In 2023 the interest is 0.46 percent on loans to be repaid within 35 years, and 1.78 percent on loans to be repaid within 15 years.
- If from 1 August 2023 you receive student finance for the first time for an MBO programme, you will have 35 years to repay your debt.
- If you receive student finance for an MBO programme and you continue to do so after 1 August, you have a choice. You can choose to repay your student debt within either 15 years or 35 years.
- If you no longer receive student finance from 1 August 2023, you will have 15 years to repay your debt.
- If you have a student debt for MBO and the repayment phase has already started, you will continue to repay your debt within 15 years.
You can find more information on the page about the repayment rules.
You don’t need to apply for repaying in 35 years. This will be done for you automatically. We will also automatically adjust the interest rate. In July, you will receive a notification about this from DUO.
If you can switch to repaying within 15 years, DUO will let you know what you have to do.
