Overview

With the student travel product you can travel for free or at a reduced rate by train, tram, bus and metro throughout the Netherlands. You can choose either a weekday or a weekend subscription. You arrange the student travel product along with your student finance. Unless you are studying at MBO and are not yet 18, in which case you will not receive student finance yet. You must then apply for the travel product separately.

Conditions

You are not eligible for a student travel product if you are taking a part-time or BBL (work-based) programme (MBO). However, you are eligible for a student travel product for a dual programme (HBO or university).

Gift or repayment

  • If you are enrolled in an MBO level 1 or 2 programme, the student travel product is a gift.
  • If you are studying at MBO 3 or 4, HBO, or university, the student travel product is initially a loan. This also applies to the months in which you had a travel product but were not yet 18. The student travel product, including interest, becomes a gift if you graduate within 10 years. If you fail to obtain your degree on time, you must repay the public transport (OV) loan, including interest.

You can opt not to collect your travel product. But you will not receive any extra student finance. Did you apply only for the student travel product, not for any grant or loan, but didn’t you collect the travel product? If so, you will still use up your months of eligibility to the travel product. In this situation, cancel your student finance in full in Mijn DUO.
