You are still in education
If you return to education after you have started paying off your loan, we can put your repayments on hold. This sometimes happens automatically. As soon as you stop studying, your payments resume. If you are in the preliminary phase, you have not yet starting paying but we can also put this phase on hold during your further studies.
Automatic hold with student finance
If you start receiving student finance again, we automatically put your current repayments on hold. You do not need to take any further action yourself.
No student finance
If you are you no longer receiving student finance, you must meet 3 conditions for your current repayments to be put on hold:
- You are taking a course on which students qualify for grants, loans or allowances from DUO (even if you are not receiving any of these yourself).
- You are not enrolled as an external student (‘extraneus’).
- Your eligibility period has not expired. This period is 10 years, counted from the month in which you first received student finance.
If you meet these 3 conditions, you can request that your current repayments be put on hold in in Mijn DUO.
Even outside the Netherlands, including on Aruba and Curaçao, you can log into Mijn DUO with your DigiD.
If you are unable to do so for any reason, or you live on Sint Maarten or in the Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, St Eustatius, Saba), use the form Wijziging terugbetalen studieschuld.
Lifelong Learning Credit
If you receive Lifelong Learning Credit (‘Levenlanglerenkrediet’), we can also put your repayments on hold. In this case only 1 condition applies: your eligibility period has not expired. That period is 10 years, counted from the month in which you first received student finance. You can request a hold using the form Wijziging terugbetalen studieschuld.
Resuming your repayments
Once you finish your studies, you must start paying off your loan again from the next calendar month.
You do not have to inform us that you have left education. When you unenroll from your course, we are notified automatically of the end date.
