Overview

  • The supplementary grant is part of student finance. The grant is available for students in MBO, HBO and university.
  • How much you will get depends, among other things, on your parents’ income and the number of siblings you have.

Calculation

The amount of the supplementary grant depends on the following:

  • your parents' income from 2 years ago.
  • whether your parents have to repay a student debt of their own to DUO (a lifelong learning credit doesn’t count)
  • whether you have siblings who have a supplementary grant
  • whether your parents are caring for other school-age children. School-age children who can be included are:
    • children, step or foster children, born in the period 1 Augustus 2003 up to and including 30 June 2010
    • children, step or foster children, born after 1 January 2004, studying at MBO level and entitled to a student travel product
    • children, step or foster children, who are 18 or older and who for the 2021-2022 school year were in special primary or secondary education or in adult general secondary education (1 or 2 year MAVO, HAVO or VWO)

This information is usually already known to DUO. If any information about the income is missing, we will send your parents a letter. Your parents can view and change their data in Mijn DUO.

Would you like to make an estimate of what you might get? Use the calculation tool student finance to calculate the supplementary grant.

Stepchildren and foster children

School-age stepchildren and foster children are only included in the calculation for the supplementary grant if your parents are entitled to a child-related budget (‘kindgebonden budget’) for them.

We do not automatically receive information about stepchildren and foster children and so your parents will have to provide that information themselves.

Do you want to include another school-age sibling or other child in the calculation for the 2021 supplementary grant? Your parents can do so using the Wijziging ouders form. This can also be done for previous years in which you applied for a supplementary grant.

Length of entitlement

  • You will receive a supplementary grant for MBO for as long as you get a basic grant.
  • You will get the supplementary grant for HBO or university for the official duration of your degree programme (usually 4 years).

Gift or loan

The supplementary grant for MBO levels 1 and 2 is automatically a gift. So you don’t have to repay the supplementary grant.

The supplementary grant for MBO levels 3 or 4, HBO or university becomes a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years.
