To-do list for your studies
If you are planning to study in the Netherlands, there are several arrangements you need to make. You can arrange some matters before moving to the Netherlands. Below we list the most important matters you need to arrange.
Citizen Service Number
If you have Dutch nationality but you don’t yet have a citizen service number (BSN), you will receive one when you apply for student finance. You can use your BSN to arrange a number of matters in the Netherlands, even if you are not yet in the Netherlands.
DigiD
DigiD is your log-in code for all government services. You will need your DigiD to apply for your student travel product and to log onto Mijn DUO, for example.

Open a bank account
Once you have a BSN, you can open a Dutch bank account. Check to see whether you can already open an account with a Dutch bank online. Contact the bank for more information or make an appointment with a local branch.
Arrange student travel product
You apply for the student travel product at the same time as your student finance. You can also apply for the student travel product if you are aged under 18 and are enrolling in an MBO programme.

Activate student travel product
Follow these steps to use your student travel product:
- Apply for a personal OV chip card Link opent externe pagina .
- Wait for the welcome e-mail from studentenreisproduct.nl. You will receive this e-mail within 6 weeks before your travel product takes effect. If you submit your application later, you will receive the e-mail within 1 week after your application.
- Transfer the details of your personal OV chip card to studentenreisproduct.nl. This is called linking Link opent externe pagina . The welcome e-mail explains how linking works.
- Go to a OV-chipkaart service point Link opent externe pagina and load the student travel product onto your OV chip card. In Mijn DUO you can see when you will be able to collect the student travel product from the machine.
Travel for MBO students aged under 18
If you are an MBO student aged under 18, you are not eligible for student finance, but you are entitled to the student travel product. Use the MBO student finance application form to apply for the student travel product. Next, follow the steps under 'Activate student travel product'.
Health insurance
While studying in the Netherlands, you will usually need to apply for Dutch health insurance. This video (in Dutch) explains what you will need to do.
Deregister from local population register (PIVA)
The island where you live has a population register (PIVA administration). You must deregister from the PIVA administration within 10 days before moving to the Netherlands.
Municipal registration
You must register with the municipality where you will be living (in the Municipal Personal Records Database, ‘BRP’) within 5 days of arriving in the Netherlands. Check the municipal website to see if you can already make an appointment.
