Applying for student finance from the Caribbean region

Gift or repayment

Certain components of student finance may be exempt from repayment, depending on the programme you chose and whether you obtain a diploma.

MBO levels 1 and 2

For MBO levels 1 and 2, the basic grant, supplementary grant and student travel product are a gift. You will only need to repay any borrowed amounts plus interest after completing your education.

MBO level 3 or 4, HBO and university programmes

For MBO level 3 or 4, HBO and university programmes, the basic grant, supplementary grant and student travel product are a ‘performance-related grant’. This means they become a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years. The 10-year period takes effect on the 1st of the month in which you first get student finance. You will be required to repay a student loan with interest after completing your education.

The performance-related grant is subject to interest from the first month you receive it. If you obtain your diploma in time, the interest becomes a gift as well.
