The repayment process

There are various ways  to repay your student debt.

How much do you pay?

How much you have to repay each month depends on the amount of your debt, the duration of the repayment phase and the interest rate.

We calculate the amount of your monthly repayments needed to pay off your debt and the related interest within the repayment phase.

When calculating your monthly instalments, we may take your income into account. This can mean that you pay less. Your payments could even be reduced to zero. You have to request a reduction yourself and inform DUO of your income.

Calculation tool

You can use the calculation tool (in Dutch) to estimate the amount of your monthly repayments.

For how long do you pay?

You have either 15 or 35 years to pay off your debt. Which of these periods applies depends on the repayment rules for your particular situation. In Mijn DUO, under ‘Mijn Schulden’ (My debt), you can find which repayment rules apply to you.

In some situations, you may switch repayment rules. If this applies to you, you will receive a letter before your repayment phase starts. In this letter, we explain what a switch entails and what you need to do if you want to switch.

Choose how to pay

You can repay your debt in various ways:

In Mijn DUO you can indicate how you wish to pay.

Local repayment in your own currency

You can opt for local repayment. You then pay your monthly instalments into a local account, in your own currency . This is cheaper than transferring money into an account in the Netherlands.

Monthly instalments by manual bank transfer

If you do not have a Dutch bank account, you must pay your monthly instalments by manual bank transfer. We will send you a request for payment each month. You must pay in euros.

I didn't receive a request for payment

You want to make a manual payment on your student debt? Use the following details for your remittance:

IBAN: NL45 INGB 0705 0019 03
BIC: INGB NL2A
Account holder: Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs, Groningen, The Netherlands.
Under 'Description' (or equivalent), enter your Dutch Citizen Service Number (burgerservicenummer, bsn) with the extension 'ILS'. For example: 123466789ILS. This extension ensures the correct processing of your payment.

Your bank may also ask for the name and address of the receiving bank. This is:

ING Bank N.V.
Foreign Operations
PO Box 1800
1000 BV Amsterdam
The Netherlands

A payment from another country may take long to arrive. Please take this into account.

Monthly instalments by direct debit

You can set up a direct debit if you have a Dutch bank account. This way, you make monthly instalments in euros to pay off your student debt.

Annual payments

If you opt for annual payments, you pay the amount in euros once a year, and you also incur transaction fees and currency charges only once a year. You can request annual payments in Mijn DUO or by using the form 'Changes loan repayment'.

Webinar about repayment

You can also watch the webinar (in Dutch) where we explain the process for repaying your student debt.
