Public transport allowance for course or internship abroad

Your student travel product is not valid outside of the Netherlands. If you are doing a course or internship abroad, you can apply for a public transport allowance instead. For 2023, the public transport allowance is €120.96 per month.

If you are going abroad but want to keep your travel product active, simply don't apply for the public transport allowance.

Eligible for how long?

You can receive the public transport allowance as long as you are eligible for the student travel product. The amount of the allowance is determined per calendar year. That is why the notification will only state the public transport allowance up to and including December. If your entitlement extends beyond December, you will receive a new notification as soon as the allowance for the following year has been determined.

Full course abroad

If you are taking a full course abroad, you can arrange the public transport allowance when you apply for student finance. You don’t need to send any supporting documents.

Going abroad temporarily

If you’re going abroad temporarily, for instance for an internship, you need to apply for the public transport allowance separately. There are 2 conditions:

  • You must remain registered as a full-time student at your Dutch study programme.
  • Your course or internship abroad must be a part of your Dutch study programme.

The public transport allowance will not take effect until the month after your application. So you need to apply in time, preferably 2 months before going abroad.

Apply
  1. Download the 'Verklaring onderwijsinstelling bij ov-vergoeding buitenland' form and have it completed by your educational institution.
  2. Log in to Mijn DUO. Go to 'Mijn producten' and choose 'Studiefinanciering' or 'Reisvoorziening onder de 18'. Under 'Reisvoorziening', choose 'Wijzigen'.
  3. Upload the form in Mijn DUO. You will be notified when your request has been processed.
  4. Remember to cancel your student travel product from the start of the month when your public transport allowance begins. If you don’t do this in time, you won’t receive a public transport allowance for the month in which your student travel product was still active.
  5. Are you moving out of your parents' house due to your course or internship abroad? If you do MBO, you can also apply for a grant for students living away from home. Go to 'Mijn producten', 'Studiefinanciering' and change your living situation behind 'Soort studiefinanciering'.
