Students who meet the conditions, will receive a one-off energy allowance of €400. This scheme is meant for students who are entitled to a supplementary grant based on their parents’ income, in order to help cover the increased energy costs.
Payment
Most students who are eligible for the energy allowance, have received the money on January 15. If your eligibility is established later, the payment will follow automatically as soon as possible. You do not need to apply for it. The energy allowance is a gift.
Conditions
There are 2 groups of students who are eligible for the energy allowance.
Group 1: Students living away from home and receiving a supplementary grant
You are in this group if you meet the following conditions:
- On October 1, 2023, you received a grant for students living away from home, and
- On October 1, 2023, you received a supplementary grant amounting to more than €0.
Group 2: Students who can only borrow
You are in this group if you meet the following conditions:
- On October 1, 2023, you were no longer eligible for a performance-related grant (basic grant and supplementary grant), and
- In your last month of performance-related grant, you received a supplementary grant amounting to more than €0, and
- In October 2023 you had a loan with DUO amounting to more than €0. The lifelong learning credit or tuition loan alone does not entitle you to the allowance.
Payment through DUO
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) is responsible for this scheme. At the request of the ministry, DUO pays the energy allowance, because only DUO can ascertain whether you meet the conditions. The money will be paid into the same account number as your student finance.
