Additional earnings

Students to whom the old student finance system applies, are not allowed to earn an unlimited amount of additional income.

Old student finance system

Do you still fall within the old student finance system? Then an additional earnings threshold applies to you. If you exceed this threshold, you must temporarily stop your student finance and your student travel product.

Do you fall within the new student finance system? Then your income has no effect on your student finance.

How high is the additional earnings threshold?

In 2018, you can earn a maximum of € 14,456.00 in additional income (2017: € 14,215.75). This refers to your gross income or taxable wage, and you must keep accurate records of your earnings yourself.

What do you have to do?

It’s not possible to stop your student finance in April. From May you will once again be able to do so via Mijn DUO. For more information, see DUO is upgrading.

Consequences of too much income

If you exceed the additional earnings threshold without stopping your student finance and student travel product, you will have to repay the amount that you earned above the threshold. You will never have to repay more than the amount of the basic grant, supplementary grant and student travel product that you received in that year.
